End-of-life disaster response

If you are reading this, I'm gone' and I miss you already. There's a lot here, but the first order of business is telling people.

Contact the following friends and family directly before announcing it to others. Create a note on my phone, then copy/paste it to:

  • iMessage: Chris (Brother), Rob, Andy, Greg
  • Signal: Chris (Here), Jason
  • Facebook: Carrie Magruder, Wesley Roberson, Jason Foster
  • Instagram: Mike Johnson
  • Discord: Laurent (Lucid), Zack (ZackAttack)

The news will filter down from there, and there's some overlap here (Rob, Carrie, and Mike, and Wes and Jason, for example). After that, you can post on Facebook and Instagram to let everyone else know.

Tech

This section covers the topics that will help you access my emails and website logins. It'll also let you know who to give my tech things to or who to ask for help when something breaks.

Emails

As you know, I primarily use ksolomon@gmail.com. You can login through my phone or ipad. Keep my phone and ipad until you haven't used them for one year just in case a 2FA issue comes up. You also have access to my primary 2FA service (Authy) on your phone.

  • ksolomon@gmail.com password is stored in Bitwarden, but you can also reset the password with 2FA on my phone if you need to. This is the email I use for everything, so keep it active and check it regularly.
  • keith@keithsolomon.net Low traffic, only certain things go here. Tied to my web hosting, so as long as that's active, this will be too. No 2FA.
  • zarathos_@hotmail.com - Mainly spam, but also tied to PayPal, so keep it active. No 2FA. You can reset the password by using the recovery email (my GMail) if you need to.

Add ksolomon@gmail.com to your phone, actually, since that's where we get our shipping alerts, bills, etc.

Domains and blogs

  • All of my domains are managed via NameCheap and CloudFlare
    • NameCheap and CloudFlare auto-renew via Paypal
    • If you want to sell the domains, you can transfer them to Chris (Here) or just let them expire. If you want to keep them, just make sure they stay active and that the auto-renew is working.

Password Managers

You know how to use this since we've incorporated it into our lives.

  • Bitwarden. My master password is (printed, no script): _________________________________________

Subscriptions

These should all just keep going on autopay, but if you want to cancel any of them, you can do so through the respective websites. The passwords are all stored in Bitwarden.

  • Amazon Prime
  • Netflix
  • Disney+
  • DAZN
    • This will start and stop to coincide with the NFL season. You can cancel this.
  • Spotify
    • Just keep this account since its a family account
  • Apple Subscriptions (Do this on my phone or ipad)
    • Click Settings
    • Click the big thing at the top with my name
    • Click Subscriptions
  • Microsoft 365
    • Office, OneDrive, etc. This is a family subscription, so you can just keep it going and add your own email to it if you want.
    • If you want to cancel it, you can do so through the Microsoft account website.
  • Microsoft GamePass Ultimate
    • We have two accounts here, one for me and one for Ethan. You can keep these going if you want to keep access to the games, but if you want to cancel them, you can do so through the Microsoft account website.

Homelab

  • DO NOT SELL WITHOUT FORMATTING OR DESTROYING DISKS. This could be an identity theft disaster.
  • Chris (Here) can help with maintence and troubleshooting, but unless something breaks, these machines should just keep running and doing their thing.
  • Documentation for the major parts (Plex, *aar stack, etc) can be found at: ____________________________

Restarting network services

  • If the Internet goes out, restart the modem using the Bell Wifi app. If that doesn't work, unplug it physically (white box on my desk downstairs), then physically plug it back in.

Home automation / IoT (Tuya, etc)

If you change the name of the wifi (like if you move and use the ISP's built-in wifi), then you will have to reconnect:

  • Tuya devices (smart plugs, smart light bulbs, etc)
  • Google/Echo speakers
  • Roku TVs and the Firestick
  • Eufy vacuum
  • Ring cameras

Considering that, you might want to ask Chris (Here) to setup the ISP's built-in wifi with the same name and password of our current wifi (blackbox, password is on the paper with the QR code downstairs).

Social Media accounts

  • Everything can be logged in with Bitwarden + the multi-factor apps on my phone (Authy or Microsoft Authenticator)

2FA

Fortunately, you're familiar with this because I require you to be. This is "Two factor authentication" or "2FA" or "Multi factor authentication" or "MFA". They all mean the same thing.

There are also backup recocery codes for most of these accounts, but you should only use those if you have no other choice. Thee codes are one-time use and stored in Bitwarden, in a folder name "Misc Codes" in the "Keys & Tokens" folder.

  • I use two MFA apps on my phone
    • Authy
      • I default to this most of the time unless it's not available
    • Microsoft Authenticator
      • Mainly for MS 365/XBox

Cloud Subscriptions

Much like the above subscriptions, these should all just keep going on autopay, but if you want to cancel any of them, you can do so through the respective websites. The passwords are all stored in Bitwarden.

  • Dreamhost
    • This is where my email and my websites are hosted. Its a bit old school but it works. You can login to the control panel and manage the hosting from there. If you want to cancel it, you can do so through the Dreamhost website.
  • DigitalOcean
    • Bitwarden is hosted here, so keep this going. If you want to cancel it, you should move the passwords you want to keep out of Bitwarden first. Chris (Here) can help you with this.
    • There's other things here too, but they are mostly for my side projects and not critical, so you can shut down those services.
  • Hetzner
    • This is where NextCloud is hosted, which is where I keep all of our shared files. Keep this going if you want to keep access to those files, but if you want to cancel it, you can do so through the Hetzner website. Chris (Here) can help you with this if you need.
    • Like DigitalOcean, there's other things here too, but they are mostly for my side projects and not critical, so you can shut down those services if you want.

Online Storage & Photo Backups

Photo Backups

iCloud handles this for us, so all of our photos are backed up there (on our respective accounts). If you want to keep access to the photos, just keep the iCloud subscription going. If you want to cancel it, you can do so through the Apple ID settings on my phone or ipad. I also have a secondary account with Google Photos that has a mirror of my photos. This account will be around as long as my Google account is active.

  • Don't just close these accounts though as you will lose the photos.

Cloud Storage

We have documents stored on NextCloud, hosted with Hetzner. I have lots of things stored there that you might want to view (mainly under the Documents folder), but most of what's there outside that can be ignored.

  • You can login to the web version here details are in Bitwarden.

  • From here you can download individual files, change the password etc.

  • Even if you don't use this it is a good idea to keep it as some of the files you might need in the future.

  • Backblaze/B2 Cloud Backup

    • This is where my computer backups go, and encrypted backups of important stuff from the file server downstairs. If you want to keep it, just keep it going (it's on autopay). If you want to cancel it, you can do so through the Backblaze website.

Local Storage & Backups

Like the above online storage and backups we have the file server downstairs, the tall black machine with the plexiglass front.

This stores unencrypted backups of things from my computer, software settings, our Plex media, etc. Most of our digital life is on here so it is IMPORTANT that If you decide that you don't want to keep it contact Chris (Here) who will help you wipe it. Whatever you do don't just throw it in the bin.

  • If you login to my computer, the shares are mounted as separate drives. This is everything on the server, you can navigate through it just like any other folder on the computer (like your G drive on your work computer).

Tech Tips

  • Do not EVER sell anything with a hard drive without formatting the hard drives first. Ask Chris (Here) to help.
  • Do not EVER try to sell an Apple product without following their instructions to wipe before reselling. Apple is special and associates Find My with your account so it prevents theft. The person wont be able to use it if you dont unregister the device.

Input

This is the section where money lands or exists.

Bank Accounts and Virtual Currency

We use PayPal a lot. We have two accounts, one tied to the bank (zarathos_@hotmail.com), one tied to the PC card (keith@keithsolomon.net). You may occasionally see an email from PayPal in my GMail account, this is NOT ours. It's one someone else set up using my address, so ignore those.

  • PayPal
    • Login with one of the addresses above. Both accounts have the same password, stored in Bitwarden.
  • WealthSimple
    • RRSP, RESP, TFSA, Crypto. You can login using the app on my phone or ipad. The password is stored in Bitwarden if you need it.

Life Insurance

I get this through work.

Misc

Answers to common security questions

Physical Security

  • Default PIN for everything is our normal.
  • Alarm service is A.P.I. Alarms. Service password is stored in Bitwarden in the "Bills" folder.
  • The service password is needed if you have to call them for any reason (changing the batteries, etc).

Other Stuff

  • Bills - This is where I keep track of all the bills. It's a web app that I built that I update manually as I pay the bills each month.
